Our integrated learning services are designed to empower healthcare organizations by combining Instructional Design, Clinical Simulation, Live Events, and On Demand Learning.
Are we so focused on improving patient safety that we are failing to consider the safety of the surgeon performing the operation? As we train healthcare professionals, the design of solutions that improve performance become apparent. Well-designed simulation training environments offer a unique test bed for products that improve human performance.
For instance, surgeons must typically maintain awkward postures and non-neutral positions for extensive lengths of time during surgery. As a result, they are plagued by muscle fatigue and back and neck problems. Our design analysis has revealed four primary positions, which need to be supported.
Unsupported Forward Lean
- Fatigue on back
- Neck pain
- Static loading of muscles
- Eventual rounding of shoulders/ back
Extreme Neck Posture
- Static loading of neck muscles
- Fatigue on neck and back
- Concentration of strain/stress on neck
Rounded Shoulders and Neck
- Fatigue on upper and lower back
- Neck pain and stiffness
Lateral Lean
- Unsupported back
- Fatigue on hips and back and abdominal muscles
- Disc compression
- Lean on patient bed for support
While today’s products provide support for the neck and back, they are designed from a patient-centric perspective. However, from the surgeon’s perspective, they restrict range of motion and lack flexibility. These key features are central to a surgeon’s ability to perform their job. Surgeons need a unique type of flexible support system in the operating room to optimize performance.
